It has been a part of the Birmingham metropolitan area since 1967. The first permanent settler in what would become Oxford was Levi Coffin on July 9, 1821. He and his family were among the earliest white residents in eastern Clay County when it was organized as Jefferson County on November 3, 1827. A post office called Oxford was established in 1830, and remained in operation until 1898. The town's name commemorates William Fenton Oxenford who donated £50 to purchase land for a courthouse and limits for the townspeople. The townsite at what is now Highwood Avenue and Interstate 65 was platted by Elisha Cook on August 5, 1834; Cook had come from Decatur with his brother Isaac to open up new territory in Clay County after being elected as a Democrat to fill the unexpired term of John Pemberton as sheriff/justice of this county—the first African American to hold such an office within Alabama state law at that time (Pemberton had also served as justice of probate for several years before that). This location became known locally as "Cook's Corner." The first store opened there in 1840 under license from Elijah Hicks along with other stores soon thereafter including one operated by George Waddell which located just south off Highwood Avenue between Lincoln Boulevard and US-59 acrossfrom today's Walmart . Fenton Oxenford played an important role both politically and socially into later years associated with Oxford even going so far as to serve two terms (1873-77) as Mayor against Richard Ligon who unsuccessfully sought election twice due to popular opposition theretofore unheard of within much older rural counties such as Clay . In 1895 he gave $10K towards building Centre Street Cemetery eastward fromHighwood Ave., thus creating one of few privately funded cemeteries west of Mobile Bayou throughout Reconstruction Era America . His donation helped make future downtownOxford one of most prominent shopping destinations around during those days.. In 1907 Gussie Beaumont donated land near present day University Drive and Asbury Road for use exclusively for Negro students educationally through Tuskegee Institute then founded by Booker T Washington ; it remains uninhabitedtoday but well worth exploring thanks largely to its rich history dating backto that time !! Just outside city limits today stands another historically significant building former home Ofelco Generating Station owned & operated by Faulkner Corporporated whose shutdown precipitated large demonstrations led by local black community right up until their conversion into all-purpose educational facilities known now primarily as Hoover University .... Overall we have something like 7 blocks or more covering nearly 10 square miles housing over 100 buildings/ structures containing many interesting historical items !! souvenirs abound!
