Oxford, Alabama is a town in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,593 at the 2010 census. Oxford is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was formed in 1851 when the fertile and rolling countryside around it were donated by General John C. Frémont to Pastor James Hogg for his Methodist church and school. The community rapidly grew with its own post office (1855), store (1858), school (1860), and gristmill (1861). By 1865, Oxford had a hotel, two churches, a saw mill, three stores, one blacksmith shop and twenty-four homes. In 1872 Drubb & Co., cotton brokers from Mobile Bay Territory bought 160 acres of land east of Oxford for $5 per acre from Reverend Samuel Denton to build a cotton gin and other property improvements needed for the new company's business operations. In 1875 Drubb & Co.'s house became the first permanent home in Oxford when it was moved from Mobile Bay Territory after they acquired it from Henry Hampton Pope as part of his purchase of Hammons Landing plantation near present day Hoover Dam on Lake Huron. In 1886 Ole bottled water arrived in Oxford via railroad carload from Huntsville distributor JBW Bottling Works which had purchased an Irish bottling plant on White Street outside Huntsville earlier that year. By 1890 there were six businesses in operation inOxford with seventy-six residents: four hotels including the original Ole Hotel; two stores; one bakery; two blacksmithshops; one grocery store; one carriage garage; one flour mill; ten farm implements including seven tractors and five saddles/horses; four automobiles including two Model T's used by doctors Fayette Mays & Edward Smith at nearby Auburn University during their 1893 campaign against Andrew Johnson Drubb Bros.' general store closed circa 1910 due to competition from local Hardware Store owner Gorman Aiken who built himself an eight-story brick building on what is now York Road across from Veterans Memorial Park later that decade while also expanding his produce lot into over ninety acres surrounding downtown where he erected a large white frame building capped by a red stone roof still extant today used as an administrative headquarters for several city departments until 1974 when it was razed following heavy rains which removed all but about fifteen feet of foundation remnant remaining today within sight of Interstate 5 exit 20 off Ashley Avenue
The city of Oxford, Alabama was founded on December 8, 1819 by the merger of two smaller towns. The town of Oxford was founded by James Fenton and was named in honor of King George Washington. The new city grew quickly, and within a year it had a population of over 100 people. On January 1, 1824, the City Council voted to change its name to Oxford after becoming an incorporated municipality.
