The area now known as Oxford, Alabama was first settled by the Caddo people in the late 18th century. The first white settlers arrived in 1779, when Colonel James Wilkinson and his detachment of British troops explored the region. They founded a small community on what is now US 41 near present-day Mound City. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Tennessee to drive out Cherokee forces from what is now northern Alabama. He renamed the area Oxford after his headquarters at Gainesboro. Afterward, many businessman and politicians calledOxford their home. During World War II, Oxford was one of the few cities in Alabama that refused to participate in the war effort because they felt it would contribute nothing to national interests. In 1951, however, city officials reversed themselves and joined the military effort.
