Gun targets have been a part of Oxford, Alabama for over 100 years. The first target was erected in 1872 by Capt. John P. Hogg. In 1916, the City Council voted to erect a new target range on Cemetery Road. The target range consisted of an open field with a firing platform at one end and a number of targets located around it. The first real gun battle happened at the target range on November 3, 1918 when Confederate soldiers attacked Union troops stationed there. One soldier was killed and three others were wounded before the fight ended in a stalemate. During World War II, local businesses donated firearms to the city police department in order to provide them with training for war purposes. After the war, many of these guns were used by law enforcement officers during reconstruction efforts in Birmingham after thecivil unrest that followed V-J Day.

Although Oxford has experienced some economic setbacks over recent years due to reductions in funding from local governments and businesses alike, it remains an importance cultural center for much of rural north-central Alabama – specifically within the smaller towns around it – due both to its unique history and because of its proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Birmingham or Mobile.

Polk as Commander-in-Chief of American fleets and he ordered one squadron of armed ships called "USS Constitution" to take part in operations off Cuba. Gunnery technique was improved by using practice rounds instead of live ammunition and loading projectiles into cannons from above using grapnels/struts attached to masts or upper rigging. By 1815, USS Constitution had become proficient with both cannonfire and ship-to-shore fire with her 25 guns able to pound 10 sails per second (1,000 feet per second). This type of firing allowed warships equipped with heavy guns such as frigates, corvettes, and brigands to engage enemy warships at close range while still avoiding damage from shot that would disable or even kill their adversary
