Oxford is a small town in the Birmingham metropolitan area, located about 25 miles southeast of downtown Birmingham and 10 miles west of the University of Alabama campus. The population was 15,836 at the 2010 census. Oxford is also home to Hoover Dam National Monument. The first settlers in what is now Oxford were Methodist missionaries who came from North Carolina in 1833. They founded a small gristmill on White oak Creek in 1835 and began selling flour to local farmers. In 1839, they started a post office and built a store on Market Street. In 1840, they became the first town in what is now Birmingham when they voted to incorporate as a town. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Oxford was part of Union General John Buford's army which invaded Mobile County. On April 12th, 1865, Confederate General Braxton Bragg attacked Oxford while it had been under Union occupation for three days without warning its residents or allowing them to leave their homes. A battle ensued that lasted all day and into the night; many buildings were destroyed or burned by Confederate forces including the town's Grist Mill which stood until 1942 when it was rebuilt as part of an effort by United States Army engineers to improve flood control systems around Mobile Bay. The first white settlers in Oxford, Alabama were the family of John Chapman. He and his wife, Susannah, arrived in 1819 from Virginia. John was a surveyor and landowner in the area and he plattered off some 400 acres of land near present day Birmingham. The Chappens were among the first white farmers in what is now Oxford County. In 1831, James Fenton established himself as a merchant at Commerce Street and Fairgrounds Road in central Oxford. He became known for his Fine Wines store which flourished until 1851 when he closed due to competition from stores operated by Andrew Mellon and others. In 1853, two brothers named Hardwick opened a grocery store on University Boulevard that became successful until it closed in 1865 following a fire that destroyed most of its equipment. In 1876, another grocery store, this time called The Grapeseed Store by Hargrave & Company after an Exxon gasoline station located nearby), was opened on Sportsman's Lane adjacent to Holmes High School where it continued to be successful until it closed around 1904-05 because of competition from other businesses along National Drive including Service Station No. 1 (now Blackberry Lane) which had been open since 1865. During World War II, the citizens of Oxford helped contribute $1 million dollars to help finance the war effort through their purchasing power as well as sales at local businesses such as The Grapeseed Store and The Akron Grocery Co.. After the end of World War II there was growth in retail business with several new small stores opening up followed by one large store which began marketing itself as "The Oxford Mall". However during the 1990s several small businesses went out of business while larger stores moved out or changed locations makingOxford County less vibrant than it once was
