Oxford, Alabama is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,724 at the 2010 census. Oxford is the county seat of Marshall County. The community was founded by settlers from nearby Mobile and has been continuously inhabited since 1836. The first white person to settle in Oxford was James Ransom ofMobile who arrived in 1836. He built a log cabin on what is now known as Old Milton Street and named it after his former home city of Mobile. A post office called Oxford was established in 1839 and remained in operation until 1907. The first school inOxford was called the Academy which opened on February 17, 1840 by Rev. Wm Henson with instruction for children between the ages of 7 and 12 years old. It operated for one year before being closed due to lack of enrollment. In 1845, trustees voted to open a second school which would become Grady High School today. Grady also opened its doors to students from rural areas that could not attend local schools because they were too far away or had no means to afford an education. A third school – Union Chapel School – opened in 1865 but closed within two years due to low enrollments and financial problems caused by the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1901–1902, a group of landowners organized what is now known as the Oxford Association for betterment of their village through civic improvements such as streetscape design, public baths and library redevelopment/ construction beginning with Edward Everett Hale’s addition funded by subscription alone that added a wing containing more than twenty thousand volumes onto Grady’s existing building on Main Street (now GateHouse Drive). With this new wing came increased development opportunities for English Village including: automobile production; brick making; agricultural production; major league baseball playing at Forbes Field from 1903-1906 In 1916 Drury Addition became available for purchase when the last section of Baldwin Street betweenirlwind Road and State Highway 5 got donated back to townspeople following World War I damage done during fighting around that area . This section extending from whirlwind Road east along State Highway 5 became known collectively as “Drury Lane” later renamed University Avenue after memberships grew inactive or were revoked during prohibition era membership boycotts over liquor sales there Many businesses located along Drury Lane began closure during prohibition times coinciding with Tax Resistance Movement activity against state efforts underway then also affecting other parts of town such as high school fraternity party nightlife activitiesWest Side Liquor Store closing shortly thereafter following state police raids resulting several arrests throughout late 1920s early 1930s according various media articles at time however store reopened days later without any charges brought against perpetrators soon thereafter
