Oxford, Alabama is a city in and the county seat of Pickens County, Alabama. The population was 9,711 at the 2000 census. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico just east of Mobile Bay. The original Oxford town site was laid out by General Andrew Jackson in 1819 and named for him. The present day Oxford was founded as an agricultural community in 1837 by James Witherspoon and others who drove off Chickasaw Indians who had occupied that area for several years. The first buildings were built near where Oxford-Hilton Road now intersects Third Street. A schoolhouse was built there in 1840, and a Presbyterian church was erected in 1862. In 1892 a sawmill called the "Pickens Mill" began to be operated by John Sills, Jr., father of future U.S. Congressman John Sills III (D-Morganfield). Mr. Sills also operated two other mills before his death in 1951; one mill ran until 1928 while the other continued operation until it caught fire in 1980. In 1955, JT Whitney became the first white person to own property within city limits when he purchased land east of Third Street from Troup heirs for $1 million In 1960 secessionist sentiment gripped much of southern Alabama as businesses closed down over issues such as taxes and state control over education In 1963 racism against African Americans began to increase after Governor George Wallace's campaign slogan "All men are created equal" led some people to believe that whites would not be able to compete fairly with blacks However, things changed when Attorney General Birch Bayh announced his plan to prosecute segregationists This announcement caused many African Americans working at local businesses throughout the state to leave their jobs which then left these businesses open for competition from those without any prior experience Thereafter only black employees worked at these businesses while all white employees continued working at their old job places
Oxford, Alabama is a town in and the county seat of Autauga County, Alabama. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. The Oxford historian John M. Higginbotham suggests that the name "Oxford" may be derived from Osceola, an Indian word meaning "place of dwellers." The first white settler in Oxford was Nathan Bedford Forrest who arrived in 1819. Forrest founded a cotton plantation near modern-day Oxford and named it after himself. He also built a house in what is now downtown Oxford which still stands today as part of the University of Southern Mississippi's Old Main Building campus. In 1830, according to one source, Forrest claimed 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land in present-day Autauga County for his cotton plantation and erected a log cabin there as his home. In 1848 Thomson Coleman moved from Tuscaloosa to start an animal feed business on what is now College Hill Road near the center of downtown Oxford. Coleman called this section of town "Old South". At first there were only ten or fifteen homes in this small community but by 1860 there were over 150 residents living within walking distance of school and churches. By 1870 more than two hundred families had settled here and many businesses had been established including several grocery stores and meat markets catering to local farmers while also serving customers out-of-town. John Fenton took over operation ofColeman's store when he retired from business in 1931 and continued to operate it until its closure in 1984.Fenton was born into a family that operated grocery stores throughout central Alabama for generations before him. His son John Fenton Jr., who succeeded him at the store, continues operations today as one ofAutauga County's most successful entrepreneurs with five restaurants and three retail stores located throughout central Alabama plus two convenience stores on Highway 231 just outside downtown Oxford
