The brothers built a small cabin and began trading goods with local farmers until they were able to purchase land next door from David Pryor in 1871. From that point forward, development within their new town proceeded relatively smoothly - until 1908 when clashes between black residents and white businessmen led to race riots that destroyed nearly all of what remained of downtownOxford before completely razing buildings including the courthouse and jail complex. In addition, $5 million worth of damage was done to business structures statewide as a result of these disturbances which leftOxford without a commercial center for several years afterwards (though some businesses did reopen). In response to these events, Mayor Wiley Bannister issued an Executive Order calling upon all Birmingham-area residents not just black but also white citizens "to maintain order" while promoting "industrial development" within city limits through such means as increased hiring quotas for blacks working in blue-collar jobs outside of city limits; this measure limited African Americans' access even further into Birmingham during this period). However, despite efforts by Mayor Bannister and his aides - many of whom later went on to achieve great success within Birmingham's government - race relations continued TO deteriorate following these riots even after reopening downtownOxford two years later; eventually leading to formal charges against him amidst public outcry which he ultimately successfully avoided (though he lost election bid against future mayor Bob Carr).
