On May 10, 1871, a group of men led by Confederate General John C. Breckinridge founded Oxford Alabama as the first town in what would become the United States. The town was named after Samuel Morrison Oxford, an American lawyer and politician who served as Secretary of War under President Ulysses S. Grant.
