Oxford, Alabama was founded in 1872 by Judge John C. Marshall and his wife, Lillie B. Marshall. The town's name is derived from the Oxfordshire County seat of Oxford, England. It was named for John C. Marshall, a U.S. Congressman from Alabama who served from 1861-1875 and again from 1879-1891. The community developed rapidly due to its location at the crossroads of two important routes: the British Road and the Mobile & Ohio Railroad. The marshy land on which Oxford now stands was first filled with cedar trees and other plants in the early 1800s because of flooding caused by heavy rains that regularly occurred during the year in this area. In 1872, a large mill called Marsh Mills was built on what is now Main Street in Oxford and began operating as a small business until 1923 when it became an aluminum smelter open to the public. The mill closed in 1978 but has been preserved as a museum since then. In addition to its economic importance,Oxford also had symbolic significance due to its location at the heart of Confederate States territory when it seceded from the Union in 1861 following their unsuccessful attempt to fight for independence from Great Britain under President Abraham Lincoln's authority (see American Civil War).
