There they were met by Federal forces under Major General Joseph Ewell who advanced them inland until they reached Lexington where he foundered in battle against Ulysses S. Grant's much larger force which had arrived unopposed at Athens Barracks on April 12th 1861 The Battle of Lexington ended with an engagement between Confederate General Braxton Bragg's divisions commanded by Brigadier General John Crain and UnionGeneral Joseph Ewell's division commanded by Major General Andrew Johnson with over 6,000 casualties on each side combined In 1865, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Washington D.C., setting off a yearlong civil war that ultimately produced one million dead or wounded Americans including more than 600 thousand military fatalities . After Reconstruction followed by white flight and economic decline during the 1920s, Oxford became a small community again until it experienced its current growth during World War II as part of post-World War II Birmingham . With Japanese internment beginning after Pearl Harbor On December 7th 1941 (the day Japan attacked Pearl Harbor), all citizens were required to leave their homes and head south for safety; many residents chose not to do so because they felt that shelter would be available only ifthey moved out of sight from potential Allied bombers .
