Opelika, Alabama is a town in and the county seat of Limestone County, Alabama. The population was 21,853 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Opelika River. The first scopes were made in Opelika by Ayer & Sons of Worcester, Massachusetts in 1876. The company was bought out by Alvan Browning Company in 1899 and continued to make scopes until 1906 when it merged with Abraham Lincoln Optics Industries to form Browning-Lincoln Optical Incorporated. In 1907 Browning-Lincoln merged with Vickers & Soper (later Swenckle) Co., Ltd., making it a subsidiary of Vickers-Soper Corporation. In 1911 Browning-Lincoln began producing binoculars under the Dobsonian brand name. In 1932 their line was reorganized into six divisions: Dobsonian Telescopic; Infantry/ artillery; Barlow rifles; Zeiss optics; and Military model telescopes which became known as "Brownings". Browning-Lincoln died in 1957 but their optical products continue to be produced today by Raytheon Polaroid Corporation under the name "Browning products" or sometimes just "Raytheon."

In 1951, but before it merged with Mobile to form "Opelika-Mobile", the City Limits separated again when Butts County was created from portions of Montgomery County including what are now parts of east Laurens and west Athens counties because of redistricting following World War II. Buttons County was formed on November 3rd 1908 from parts of Montgomery and Baldwin Counties plus Butler County which had been annexed by Baldwin County two years earlier
