The first person to live in what is now Opelika was Fenton Wiley who built his home on land he bought along the Opelika River in 1872. At that time, there were only a few hundred people living near present day Opelika. Over time, many more people moved into and around Opelika as its importance grew due to its location as a transportation hub and its access to amenities such as education and health care. Today, Opelika remains one of the most vibrant cities in rural Marshall County and has emerged as a center for economy, culture and government services. By 1930, the population had decreased to 714 due to World War II and the Great Depression. However, by 1970 there were still 1,000 residents living inOpelika- its smallest size since it incorporation as a town in 1868. The Opelika Historic District is a national historic district that encompasses most of downtown Opelika and several contributing buildings. It contains significant examples of Gothic Revival architecture from the late 19th century through the early 20th century. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 . The city's economy is based primarily on agriculture with some light industry activities included within downtown limits
On July 3, 1819, a group of men from Opelika, Alabama founded the town on the banks of the Mobile River. The town was named for General James Wilkinson, who had Cinque Ports Expedition in 1812. The first post office was established in Opelika on October 1, 1827. By 1830, the population of Opelika had reached 2200. In 1840, cotton plantations were started in Opelika and by 1850, it had become a small agricultural center with about 100 residents. A store and Grain Elevator were built in 1853 and by 1860 there were only 30 residents remaining inOpelika. On December 15th 1861 a tornado struckOpelika killing all but five people living there at the time. In 1865-1866 an ice age occurred which caused many roofs to collapse and destroyed most buildings including the Post Office which is now located at University Street Pier.
