Opelika, Alabama is a city of over 100,000 people located in the Shelby County area of central Alabama. It was founded by Englishman George Stephenson and named after his family's home town in Yorkshire, England. The city has been inhabited for over 300 years and is known as the "Bright Star of Birmingham." In 1892, Stephenson donated land to build what would become Opelika's first school. The building that now houses the city hall was originally built to house the school. The City Council established a Municipal Library in 1903 and soon began fundraising for its construction. On December 3, 1907, the library opened its doors with books from the British Library. The library is still open today and offers a variety of services including reference materials, internet access, video rentals, and special events such as book signings or museum tours. In 1915 Opelika became one of only four cities in Alabama (the others being Mobile, Selma & Montgomery) to be granted an income tax exemption from state taxation. This privilege was also given to other nearby towns such as Cullman and Decatur due to their relatively high population densities at that time. In 1925 Opelika hosted its first municipal election which resulted in the election of Mayor John Treadwell who served until 1931 when he was succeeded by Wm Hoey Hilliard who served until 1945 when Opelika became an independent municipality under the leadership of Mabel Ladds. In 1948 Opelika joined with other municipalities withinAlabamato form ALTFest which grew into one of America's leading tourist destinations for outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing and golfing during Springtime through Falltime on various beautiful mountain ranges throughout Alabama From 1985-1990Opelikanetook partin'theNationalTourism Planandorganizeda seriesoffestivalstopromote tourism within our community

Opelika, Alabama is a city in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. The population was 61,812 at the 2010 census. Opelika is the second largest city in Mobile County afterMobile and it is also the third-largest city in Alabama after Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. The first Europeans to visit what is now Opelika were French traders in 1699. In 1819, General James Wilkinson founded the town of Enterprise on the south bank of the Opelika River along Mobile Bay. The name "Enterprise" was chosen because it would not be taken by any other British settlements on Mobile Bay until after Opelika had been named for General Wilkinson's father-in-law Brigadier General Elijah Porter (1768–1834), who fought with distinction under George Washington at Fort Moultrie during the War for Independence. On July 4, 1821, Wilkinson organized a township from Warrior Creek Township eastward to present day Interstate 65 and northward to White Street (now Fairgrounds Road). In 1830, Indian Removal began and most of present day Montgomery County was lost to Indian Territory; however some land remained within present day Mobile County including part of what is now Opelika. In 1833, Volney Gist established a post office at Enterprise which became known as Gistville following his death in 1836. Cherokee Trail led downriver from Chattanooga into Indian Territory where many Cherokees had settled before being forced west by Ulysses S Grant's forces during the American Civil War In 1870, an act was passed legalizing slavery in Alabama but this measure did not take effect until 1865 when all slaveowners were given two years' notice to free their slaves or face legal action In 1889 Union Pacific Railroad reached Enterprise and started construction on its line north from Chattanooga through what are now downtown Opelika and Fairgrounds Station On December 1st 1901 white men working for J&L Coal Company discovered coal seams near what are now downtowns of Fairgrounds Station and Enterprise; these mines were later developed into today's White Sands National Mining District On January 13th 1912 president Theodore Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9981 which prohibited discrimination against black Americans while serving in uniform or seeking employment with federal government
