Opelika was founded in 1883 by Scottish immigrants who named it "Ochelala". Opelika's history begins with the arrival of Scots-Irish settlers in 1883. They named their new settlement "Ochelala" after a small village near Edinburgh that they had heard about from their friends and relatives back home. This settlement grew quickly and soon boasted a population of over 100 people. By 1886, Opelika had become an important thoroughfare on the Mobile & Alabama Railroad serving as an embarkation point for travelers heading southward to Muscle Shoals and other points north. In 1907, Opelika became one of two cities in Jefferson County when Birmingham annexed it from Montgomery County. At this time, its population was only 10 people; however, within 5 years, it had grown to over 50 inhabitants and rapidly became one of Birmingham's most vibrant downtown areas. In 1916, Opelika was designated as the county seat for Jefferson County; however, due to its growing importance as a commercial center withinAlabamaandtheneedfora separate courthouseandtownhallduringthe1920sand30s,[5],thecitymaintaineditsstatusasaresidential districtuntil1939whenitbecameoneofbirmingham'snew districts under Mayor Arthur Peake's "New Birmingham Plan."
