Opelika is a small town in Escambia County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,477 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Escambia County and the only city in Escambia County. The Opelika-Fernandina Micropolitan Statistical Area has a population of 927,marking it as the third-largest micropolitan area in Alabama after Birmingham and Mobile. The community began as a post office on May 12, 1892, under the name of Fernandina. It was renamed Opelika on November 3 of that year by order of Governor George W. Cullum with thanks to contributions from many residents including Mrs. Cammie Boren who contributed $10 for the name change. Mrs. Boren also donated land for a school which became known as "Opelika High School". On November 3, 1990, Opelika incorporated as a city under chapter 775 of the laws of Alabama; its charter granted to it by Act No 4of 1990 (SB 565). On December 15th voters approved an amendment to City Charter granting it an increase in government budget by 2%/year until 2019 and per capita Spending Authority from .061%/year to .088%. In addition this amendment created two new council members: Mayor Gail Dickson and Councilwoman Denise Alexander who were both elected at large with no election held within their wards; eachMember receives three votes instead of one vote per ballot cast during term limits established pursuant to Article IV Section 10A Constitution Of The City Of Opelika Incorporation & Bylaw #2 As Amended effective January 1st 2021 On July 8th 2017 City Manager Donnie Byrd announced that due to lack of funding through Tax Increment Financing (TIF) programs opelikahighschool would have to close its doors effective September 27th 2017 effective all students will have to attend either Bartow or Florence High Schools until further notice

The city of Opelika was incorporated in 1902 and became a municipality in 1907. The population of the city increased to over 100,000 by 1960, but fell to just over 50,000 by 2000. Despite this decline, the city remains an important center for commerce and culture in Marshall County. The first settlers to Opelika were white men who came from Tennessee in 1841. By 1868, there were six businesses operating in the town. In 1902, Opelika had a population of 10 residents and two stores. The first school opened in 1896 and was used until 1906 when it was replaced by the present building which seats approximately 150 people. The current library is located on Main Street within the confines of the original school structure. Opelika is home to several significant historical landmarks including: McCrary House (named for Reuben McCrary who donated land for the town), Stroud Fieldhouse (a historic arena that served as both a courthouse and municipal hall), Dowling Chapel (the worship facility for local Baptist churches throughout its history), Hammonds Mill (a flour mill operated by John Hammonds which provided jobs for many locals during World War II), Mt Pleasant Cemetery (home of Opelika's only cemetery) and Confederate General Robert Ewell's house at 6200 Old Mae Road NE
