Gun targets have been a part of Opelika, Alabama for over eighty years. The first target was shot at the Opelika Rifle and Pistol Club on November 15, 1892. The club rented a firing range from the local post office and started shooting at squirrels in early 1893. By 1895, shooting had moved to the old First Methodist Church property on Cumberland Street. The church was demolished in 1907 and replaced by a new building, but the target range continued to be used until 1915 when it closed due to lack of funding. The NRA acquired the range in 1915 and began operating it again as an open-air rifle range until it closed in 1946 due to increasing gun restrictionsin America. Gun targets resumed their popularity inOpelika after World War II thanks to the efforts of boosters such as Don DeFries who convinced local businesses to start selling them again. In 1951, Opelika Rifle and Pistol Club built a new target complex on its present site north of town that continues to serve as an active Rifle & Pistol Range today.
