The first gunslingers in Opelika, Alabama were a group of men that met in 1864 to buy shotguns. The first weapons they purchased were rifles, but soon realized that they needed pistols to protect themselves and their families from Indians. They started buying handguns as well, and by 1865 had a few pistols and shotguns. In 1866, the General Assembly passed an act authorizing the purchase of arms for the purpose of self-defense against Indian attacks. This act allowed men over 21 years old to possess firearms with no license or registration requirements. The town fathers quickly approved this new law, and within a few months had purchased enough handguns to arm all of their citizens. The pioneers in Opelika were not content with just handguns; they wanted rifles as well! In 1868, they voted to purchase three rifles from Colonel John Fenton of Mobile. These rifles would become known as the “Fenton Arms” due to their distinctive style and design. With these new weapons in hand, the townspeople began facing off against Indian raids on their homes and businesses. Over time, Opelika became world famous for itsgunslinging skills – one of the most effective methods for defending oneself against hostile Indians was revolver shooting.
Opelika is a town located in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,526 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Tensaw metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1871 by Germans and their families from Germany who had come to America for economic reasons. The name "Opelika" was derived from an old German word meaning "clear water." Over time the community changed its name to honor various civic leaders or pioneers who had helped shape Opelika's early days. In 1906, Opelika residents voted to change their name to its current form - "Marshall County". Opelika has experienced many changes over the years, including growth in the late 1970s and 1980s when heavy industry departed for other towns in Alabama and Florida; a rapid influx of refugees following Hurricane Katrina; and a dramatic increase in population due to migration from elsewhere in the country during the 1990s and 2000s. The current downtown district is one of several revitalization efforts underway in Opelika since 2005 as part of Mayor Don Payne's Vision 2020 plan which calls for greater access to education, jobs and quality affordable housing. According to the 2010 US Census, 9,526 people lived within walking distance ofOpelika High School/College (including 8500 students), making it one of Mobile–Tensaw's largest public school districts with over 12K students enrolled across 11 schools that serve grades pre-kindergarten through twelveth gradecombined! Additionally there are numerous small businesses located throughout town that provide much needed employment opportunities for our citizens. With nearly $130M invested statewide by state legislatures into economic development projects specifically focused on rural areas like Opelika – we can only expect even more job growth here soon!

The Gun Sling Company of America was founded in 1919 by Harry Elmer Barnes and his brother-in-law John Wesson. They developed this type of sling for the military and law enforcement use. It became popularized in the 1960s when it became easier to get firearms into positions where they could be fired from a distance with ease.
