Furthermore, each firearm must be kept inside a locked cabinet or container at all times while it is not being used for personal protection. In 1968, an ordinance was passed inOpelika designating October as National Gun Light Month. This designated month consisted of various events intended to promote gun safety and education throughout the state. One such event took place on October 15th which saw the presentation of a plaque recognizing firemen who had been fatally shot while fighting fires. Opelika, Alabama is a small town in Escambia County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. Opelika is the county seat of Escambia County. The town was founded by John Fitch in 1836 as a trading post on the Mobile River. It became an incorporated municipality in 1907 and a city in 1959. The name "Opelika" means "a place where people can gather." The first Europeans to visit Opelika were Presbyterian missionaries from Scotland who arrived in 1836. They began purchasing land around the river for development and built a log courthouse and jail there in 1840. In 1843 they constructed a schoolhouse and which served as the community's main building until 1901 when it burned down. A new school building was completed in 1903 and served as the town's primary building until 1957 when it also burned down. In 1907, Opelika became an incorporated municipality with its own government under Mayor J T Hargrave Jr.. On July 15, 1960, it became an independent city with its own mayor and council system under Mayor Dale Ritchie Sr.. In 1976, Opelika hosted the Miss Universe pageant which took place at Gulfstream Park Racetrack Complex on July 26-29th
