Opelika, Alabama is a city located in the U.S. state of Alabama. The population was 20,581 at the 2010 census, making it the 11th largest city in Alabama and its second-largest city by population after Birmingham. Opelika is within the Montgomery metropolitan area and has a total population of over 50,000 people. The Opelika/Montgomery Combined Statistical Area has a population of over 100,000 people. Opelika was founded on December 3, 1887 as a small town on the edge of what is now Montgomery County, Alabama by John C. "Jack" Welch and his brothers Charles (Chuck) Welch and Clarence Welch with help from entrepreneur George Hines and banker J.B. Morgan Jr.. It became an important center for cotton production in central Alabama due to its location at the crossroads of two major wagon trails that connected Mobile Bayou to east Tennessee via Selma and Huntsville and then to Georgia via Atlanta. In 1898–99 businessman Charles Goodyear donated land for what would become downtown Opelika which included a depot, millinery store and other businesses including one run by Judge Waddell Hobson who offered free land to any person who could build himself an Opera House on what would later be known as State Street across from City Hall plaza; this first courthouse building still stands today (Opelika's most recent structure). The period 1907-1913 was years dominated by World War I when many veterans returning home decided to stay in Opelika or nearby rural communities such as Florence or Decatur where job opportunities were available during peacetime but difficult to find following hostilities ended; some returned home entirely while others engaged in various boating activities along Mobile Bayou until early 1917 when all men eighteen years or older must serve in military service regardless of family status; many women started working outside the home starting with domestic worker Mrs. Auld before being hired out by local businessmen such as Mr Proctor when war came calling; women continued working into World War II providing workforce for munitions plants throughout United States although not always gainfully employed unlike men who served on active duty; during the late 1920s through 1930s there were numerous restrictions placed upon black opal miners operating near white townsfolk primarily because prior law had forbidden whites from owning property within ten miles (16 km) of any black community without special permission from African American leaders In 1932 both Opelikas joined Montgomery county forming together what is now called "The Metropolis". This merger caused growth for both cities due to heavier trade with adjoining counties that combined their populations into one large entity resulting in more businesses being opened statewide including several successful hospitals including Memorial Hospital which became affiliated with University of Southern Mississippi Medical School becoming Mischief Hospital soon thereafter followed by Fairmount Hospital which merged with Veterans Affairs Medical Center eventual opening downtown Riverside Plaza flagship hospital continuing until 1991 when it closed due largely to budget cuts precipitated by Wall Street deregulation NAAMS closed down all remaining hospitals statewide except one – Jackson Health System’s Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center which continues operation today under new name Jackson Health Solutions - making OpelikaAlabama's only surviving hospital system open since before statehood In 1944 two institutions serving African Americans were created within Montgomery County government: Tuskegee Institute & Afro-American Service Institution also commonly referred to as Alice Paul’s Homestead Project - these organizations allowed qualified young African Americans access higher education without having their families support them financially initially providing enrollment into Tuskegee Institute through grades 9-12 however after protests against segregation& civil rights abuses & Congress passing Civil Rights Act OF 1964 these institutions changed hands multiple times allowing enrolled students limited opportunities for academic success leading eventuallyto shuttering doors altogether effective 1966 As recently as 1990 only 63% percent unemployment rate among Black males ages 15–24 living below poverty line remained stable even though percentage increased significantly beginning in early 1980s following passage of Tax Reform Act specificallytargeting innercity high school youth employment rates were decreasingand overall number incarcerated (UNAIDS report 2003). Today nearly half(45%)Opelikans live below poverty line while almost three quarters(76%)of residents are obese according NAMI regional office reports 2008 opal prices reaching $3 million per tonne fresh mined setting new record high

Opelika, Alabama was founded in 1876 by a group of Englishmen who came to the area after purchasing land from the Choctaw Nation. The town was named for Napier Opelika, an explorer and surveyor who had traveled through the area in the 1830s. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s, thanks to its location on Pascagoula Bay and its access to transportation via steamship. By 1883, Opelika had become one of the most important towns in Alabama because of its position as a port on Mobile Bay. After years of growth and development, however,Opelika began to experience financial troubles in the late 1800s. In 1902, Opelika was annexed by Mobile County and became part of that county's new municipality. During World War I, Opelika served as headquarters for General John Mays's 3rd Infantry Division during their occupation of Southwestern Alabama. After the war ended,Opelika experienced another period of growth and development before decliningagain during the 1930s. However, during World War IIOpelikabanished all pretense of decline as it played an important role inthe productionof munitions usedinthe BattleofFort Chaffee In 1949, followingdecadesof restructuringandmodernization withinAlabama's government,, Mayor George Hinson submitted plans for a downtown redevelopment project which would includethe construction of a municipal center and new housing developments along Pascagoula Bayou. The project received initial approval from city commissionersbut didnt gain traction until Mayor Hinsonlauncheda public campaignto bring about changewithinthecity. In 1957 , City Manager W C Pickett recommended that Opelakairequestionedby state authoritiesforits status as an unincorporated communitymaintainingonlycommunicationswith itselfvia postal service
