Opelika, Alabama is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama and the county seat of Marshall County. The population was 43,871 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in Marshall County after Birmingham. The first permanent settler in Opelika was David Sperry, who arrived on July 4, 1818. He named it "New Alabam" and built a log cabin on what is now State Route 213 south of town. In 1830, he married Margaret White and they started to cultivate land east of town along FM 1924. They also built a cotton gin near present-day downtown Opelika to process their cotton crop. In 1832, General Andrew Johnson appointed Jephson as the first postmaster for Opelika; he served until 1835 when Samuel Easley took office and continued to serve until 1863 when John Hinton became postmaster (though his term expired December 31, 1864). Jackson Cottage was built by Alexander Jackson in 1840 as his home outside of town on what is now US 41 north of town; it burned down in 1901 but was rebuilt under city auspices and still stands today. In 1865, Confederate general Jubal Early attacked Mobile with 1,200 men while advancing through Marshall County into Alabama; most of those killed were from Opelika although some were from nearby Baldwinville (now part of Birmingham). The attack destroyed many homes and businesses within blocks of where Opelika sits today; about one-third of all buildings west of I-10 were destroyed or damaged during Early's raiders' march through Marshall County that day. The city's only industry up until quite recently has been its Participation In Aids To Agriculture program which helps farmers purchase equipment and inputs needed for agriculture including seed production/transportation/mowing/farming etc., this program has been run since 1955 by The City Of Opelika Incorporated which provides direct cash assistance to qualifying farmers each calendar year through January 2nd
