Northport is a town located in Colbert County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. Northport is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered by Sheffield to the north and east, Florence to the south and west, and Gadsden to the northwest. Northport was founded in 1892 by J.C. Nichols as a small farming community on Mobile Bayou. The original town name may have been "Ifland". In 1903, Nichols built what became known as "The Old Courthouse" in Northport as his primary residence and office for government business. In 1966, he donated this property to the town for use as a park. TheOld Courthouse now serves as district courthouse for Colbert County. Northport also has two churches - First Baptist Church (founded 1906) and Southside Baptist Church (founded 1914). The Post Office opened in 1892 and served until 1907 when it was moved to Sheffield due to phone lines being shorter there than in North Port. The first postmaster was A.D Whitehurst who served from 1892-1895 The first store opened in 1895 which was called "Jenkins' Store". This store closed two years later because of lack of customers In 1905, J C NICHOLS built what became known as "The Old Courthouse" which still stands today with its own driveway leading into it . In 1966 A F WHITEHURST gifted this building to the town for use as our new district courthouse
