Northport, Alabama is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama and the county seat of Marshall County. The population was 41,814 at the 2010 census, making it the 11th-largest city in Alabama and its second-largest city after Birmingham. Northport is located on the mouth of Muscle Shoals River on Mobile Bay, a short distance upstream from Mobile City Proper on the Gulf Coast. The area that would become Northport was first settled by Native Americans in 1795 as part of what is now Marshall County. In 1819, Captain John Atwater founded a trading post at Fort Atwater on present day Neches Street just east of wherepresent day Renaissance Park is located today. The post was abandoned in 1837 when navigation improved to allow steamboats to pass through the river mouth instead of sailing overland to reach Mobile Bay. In 1848, General James Kenedy built Fort Gibson on an bluff overlooking Mobile Bay for his Confederate forces during the American Civil War. After Union troops took control of Mobile Bay in 1865, Fort Gibson became an artillery base for Confederate forces until it surrendered in 1865 along with all other Confederate forts within 24 hours following Union victory at Battle of Jonesboro. During Reconstruction era (1868–1877), Northport became one of several black towns set up by white landowning citizens throughoutAlabama as part of new deal called "Emancipation Proclamation". Many African Americans who had been enslaved before were freed and moved into northcentralAlabama under this program known as "The Freedmen's Bureau." They bought or rented land hereabouts which they developed into large plantations known as "New Black Town". Negroes were later forced out by white developers when their lands were taken over by whites for development outside their original boundaries - most famously around Baldwin City which began construction near current day University Parkway/Old US Highway 301 and continuing eastward to eventually form downtown Baldwin City today while north end formed new town center including much larger shopping mall known as Midtown Crossing shopping center that also includes two homebuilders' complexes: Holiday Inn Express & Hilton Garden Inn which opened in 1984; both projects have since closed down but remain extant inside Midtown Crossing complex - currently used mostly for offices and / or apartments; In 1970s many businesses vacated downtown due to racial violence between police officers & African American tenant farmers who had made good living from agriculture - some farms still stand today adjacent to Interstate 20 exit just south side Main Street intersection next door to grocery store - these farms are being restored & managed as nature preserve open space

Afterward, many African American residents moved into the town while white residents left for various reasons including racial integration which began happening in Montgomery County soon thereafter. Additionally, numerous businesses were closed during the late 1800s because of competition from more developed towns in Alabama such as Birmingham and Huntsville. In recent years there has been efforts made to restoration some aspects of North Port's past including commemoration of local Civil War veterans and development of a museum dedicated to local history
The town of Northport was founded in 1836 by George Washington Dixon. The town grew rapidly, and by 1867 it had a population of over 1,500 people. It was the first community in Alabama to be established as an agricultural center. Northport became a municipally-owned municipality in 1907.
