Northport is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,624 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile-Tuscaloosa-Huntsville metropolitan area. Northport is located on the Mobile Bay and forms part of the Gulf Coast plain. The town was founded in 1881 by members of the Holcombe family who had come from Kentucky to work on salt mines in Alabama. The original plat for Northport was filed on December 12, 1881 and named for John Prentice Holcombe, one of the founders of Uniontown (now Roswell), Georgia. At its peak during World War II, Northport had a population of 10,000 people; however it only grew to 1,500 after the war ended. Today's population is 1,564 and consists largely of retirees or those who have moved away from their home country due to economic reasons or other interests such as education or health care opportunities in nearby Mobile and Tuscaloosa counties. In addition to its retirement community services and businesses that cater specifically to seniors like grocery stores and store hours that are similar to those found in smaller towns throughout America (such as closedowns during lunchtime), Northport also offers a wide variety of cultural attractions which include two performing arts theaters (the Performing Arts Center and First National Bank Amphitheater) as well as a art museum which features local artists each month.
