Northport is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama, on the Mobile River. The population was 9,954 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baldwin County metropolitan area. Northport was founded in 1819 by General Andrew Jackson and is the oldest continuously inhabited town in Alabama. The first European to set eyes on what would become Northport was Captain John Smith, who landed there in 1699 during his expedition against Timucua Indians. In 1795, Frenchman François le Moyne and his party explored Mobile Bay and named it Nôtre-Dame-de-la-Madeleine after Lady Frances Beaufort, wife of British Admiral Sir George Monckton. After Spanish troops burned down Fort San Miguel de Allende (now called Presidio) on Mobile Bay in 1796, Native American leader Muscogee Chief Ocmulgee offered protection to General Jackson's forces attacking Spanish posts along theMobile River estuary from Montgomery to Pensacola if they built him a fortification known as Forts Jackson and Neuse near where he now lives on White Sands Beach within sight of Mobile Point Light House moored offshore about northeast of downtown Mobile proper about north latitude 27° 09' 25" W longitude 05° 07' 15" E (Latitude: 31° 04' 02" N; Longitude: 05° 07' 15" W). This location became known as Fort Monroe until its construction by United States President James Kenedy in 1824 following Spain's withdrawal from that country following their Mexican War victory over Mexico under Santa Anna. As an aid to navigation for navigation purposes only - no military function was ever served at this site - it has been variously Anglicized as Fort Monroe (1824), Fort Moselle (1848), or Camp Butler (1870). Northport is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 5,816 at the 2010 census. Northport was founded on January 24, 1892 by settlers from Mobile and Pensacola. It became a city on December 1, 1907. On December 3, 1970, it merged with the neighboring city of Marengo to form the new city of Northport-Marengo. The merger was approved by voters in a referendum held that same day. The founding of Northport is significant because it marked the first time that Alabama had two cities within its borders. At the time of its establishment, Northport consisted of just over one hundred residents and barely enough land to support more than a single streetlight. Nevertheless, Northport quickly grew into one of the most important towns in Jefferson County – serving as an center for trade and industry as well as housing many of the county's early pioneers. One such Pioneer who helped shape Northport's history is Nathan Bedford Forrest Jr., better known simply as "Nate". Nate was born in 1822 in what is now Lowndes County, Georgia and arrived in Mobile Bayous during the early 1800s looking for new land to claim after being kicked out of his native England for supporting abolitionism. He found success farming rice plantations in Mobile Bayous but decided to move on when he learned about American slavery (which he thought would be abolished soon). Instead, he discovered an even more profitable business opportunity: slave trading! After acquiring some valuable African slaves himself ( totaling over twenty thousand dollars worth), Nate began marketing these goods through his local port – making profits hand over fist before finally becoming one of America's largest slave traders! In fact, Nate's successful slave trading career led him to become one of America's richest men – surpassing even sugar magnate John D Rockefeller! This notoriety allowed Nate to build up quite a following amongMobile businessmen and eventually gain political power in post-Revolutionary Alabama… all without ever losing his commitment to abolitionism! Despite this impressive resume (and subsequent wealth), much has changed since Nathaniel Bedford Forrest Jr.'s heyday as a powerfulslave trader/politician…most notably our current climate!
