Northport is a small town in the Alabama state of Alabama. It was founded in 1881 by Nicholas North and his wife, Anna. Northport is located on the Mobile River, northeast of Mobile. The population was 12,822 at the 2010 census. The name "Northport" comes from English settlers' Account Book No. 1 which described it as "the pleasant port on the Mobile River for traffic to and from Pensacola." Nicholas North and Anna were born in England in 1776 and married in 1787. They emigrated to America with their two children, Nicholas and Anna Jr., arriving at Boston on October 11, 1881. The family started a commercial enterprise that grew over time into one of the most successful businesses in Mobile County: N&A Grain Elevator Company (now part of Altamira Inc.). In 1936, they donated land for the first campus of Bradley University; the current campus opened in 1966. After years of growth, N&A grain Elevator Company went bankrupt in 1982; however, their legacy lives on through Bradley University's many endeavors including an annual grain elevator festival and agricultural incubation program called "N&A Faire". In recognition of its history, native son Nicholas North has been posthumously inducted into both the Alabama State Legislature’s Hall Of Honor and local United States Congressmen Don Youngblood (served 1971-1983) and Oliver Stoddard (served 1983-1993). A statue honoring him was placed outside City Hall prior to its dedication last year by then Mayor Art Acevedo along with Mr. North's grandson Nicholas North III who also served as Chancellor during that time
