In 1829, Colonel James Kenedy and twenty-one men founded what would become Cedarville Plantation on land near present-day Pensacola Beach Boulevard just north of downtown Northport. The plantation became known as one of Mobile's most successful cotton plantations until it was sold to investors in 1865 and abandoned several years later due to financial problems. In 1867, local lumberman Wiley Britton developed a salt mine around milepost 3 on Uboat Landing Road which began producing salt water during the late 1800s; this led to development around milepost 4 where Britton's Today's Northport Shopping Center now stands. After World War II, many veterans returned to find their homesickness replaced by memories of good times spent livingand workingin northcentralAlabama .
