Northport is a city in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. The population was 10,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mobile County and home to Northport-Milton Municipal Airport. The city was founded in 1873 by Andrew G."Drummond" Stevenson and named for his home town of Northampton in England. In 1896, the community annexed the village of Milton and renamed it Northport. The population had grown to 24 residents by 1900 but decreased to 10 by 1910 due to major new housing projects being developed in that decade. The Great Depression led to a decrease in population as people left for food stamps or other government assistance. In 1940, the Community Development Authority (CDA) was created within the city limits as part of mayor John Pemberton's plan to provide more services for low-income citizens. In 1990, Mayor Don Norvell announced plans to demolish all of north central Mobile's remaining brick buildings and replace them with large glass structures symbolizing progressiveness and economic vitality since Reconstruction era times. A referendum resulted in support for demolition but CITY COUNCIL voted 7-1 against it;rendering Norvell powerless to carry out his plan without City Council approval which he could not obtain without voter turnout above 50%. After years of litigation filed by preservationists who argued that demolishing old brick buildings would impede redevelopment efforts rather than promote it, NORWICH v CITY OF MIMBLEY et al was decided by a 3-2 jury on December 6th 2009 with Judge James Ewing dissenting because he felt that tear down should be deferred until after zoning changes were made which would allow taller buildings conversion into apartments;an event which never happened despite public outcry from Preservationists throughout town who wanted their homes preserved regardless of development potential There have been numerous attempts over time either through ordinance amendments or plebiscites to rezone/amend zoning laws affecting Northport so that taller building conversions will not occur; however these have always been voted down unanimously due to lack of political will on behalf of city leaders

Northport is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama and the county seat of Russell County. It was founded in 1836 by white men from Georgia, who named it for their new home on the Gulf of Mexico. The population was 9,607 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Russell County after Vestavia Hills and Opelika. Northport is located on Alabama's Black Belt region and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in America. The town began as a small trading post on the lower Mobile Bayou River, about three miles (5 km) downstream from present-day downtown Northport. In 1837, John Crain built a log cabin near what is now downtown Northport to serve as store and government office for his trading post. A year later, he donated land to establish what would become Northport Village, which included a schoolhouse and millrace that served as local water supply and navigation channel. In 1840, saltpeter production became an important factor in early development of Northport Village; when saltpeters were discovered adjacent to contemporary Vestavia Hills, settlers began smuggling saltpeter back into Mobile Bayou to sell to merchants there instead of shipping it all over Great Britainico Island where it was produced under license by Lord Cochrane. This led to increased tensions between Mobile traders and British colonists living on Cochrane's island – known locally as "The Rock" – which ultimately led to confiscation of much saltpeter output from British Point Lookout during the War for Independence (1812–1815). By 1845, however, trade with Mobile had diminished sufficiently for John Crain to build a large brick courthouse within his original village boundaries that still stands today—an event that signaled growing importance of north Alabama for commerce and industry outside OFA holdings until well into the 20th century. In 1850s–60s many other entrepreneurs also started up businesses around town such as general stores (one operated until 1902), transportation agencies including stagecoach lines running along Interstate345 between two points just west of town: White Sulphur Springs eastward through Russellville then southward through Florence before terminating at Muscle Shoals northeast of town; blacksmithing shops; grocery stores; lumberyards; breweries; tanning establishments; pottery kilns etc.; among others….Today most if not all businesses have closed or been replaced by chain stores since 2000 when Hurricane Katrina hit…. In 1819, a group of men from Northport, Alabama set out to find a new home. They were the first white people in what is now Muskegon County. The town was founded by Capt. John Chilton and his three friends in 1819. The town grew rapidly and by 1830, it had a population of 100 residents. By 1840, the population had grown to 300 residents and by 1850, it had reached 500 residents. In 1857, Northport was added to the Union National Bank System and became one of the banks in that system. In 1865, the village acquired its own post office which continued to function until 1911. In 1910, Northport was renamed after Samuel Latham Jackson who served as United States Senator from Mississippi from 1893-1897 and as Secretary of State under President Grover Cleveland from 1901-1903.
