In 1859, when Alabama became a state, Lieutenant Colonel Solomon Pinchback purchased land east of present day Northport on the Mobile River for $5 per acre ($100 total) making him one of only two men ever to own property along that river east of Pensacola Bay! Jasper Fenton Observatory had been established on this site in 1860 but soon after relocated to an even more remote location just outside town due to lack of funding or interest from local farmers or citizens alike! In 1865 Captain Samuel Holland organized a group of ten farmers/ Traders led by himself into explorationamber looking for new land grants; they found no suitable parcels & returned home without finding any new land! Some time later Captain Holland again explored & patented 4 acres (twenty square feet) on Stump Creek north-west of today’s intersection of US Highway 90W & State Road 153E - this property would become future Northport! In 1840, Nathaniel Ladd married Anna Wilkinson who was also from nearby Decatur County. They continued to live in their home until their death in 1865; after which their home passed through several hands before being acquired by local businessman Drury Hargrave who built his house on part of it circa 1907-1910. During World War II, many factories were located within or near North Port including those for aircraft manufacture and shipbuilding; most notably Ussher's Shipyards which produced tanks Landing Craft Infantry (LCI), landing craft gunships (LCTs), amphibious assault ships (ATSBs) and other warships while also providing housing for Allied workers during construction phases ashore Normandy/France etc.. After World War II ended, much of these industries closed down or changed hands but remain significant today with numerous businesses based within or near NorthPort including Thalassa Marine Inc., Alum Rock Paperie among others Today there are few remaining traces of olden times such as groceries being sold at Thompsons Drug Store - it opened up about 30 years ago - though periodic archaeological digs have revealed evidence that life did go on here back then albeit at a slower pace than present day due to lack of resources$$$.
