Gun targets have been a part of the history of Northport, Alabama for many years. The first target was erected in 1894 by J.B. Witherspoon, a local business man. The target was a steel giraffe with a cloth knotstring surrounding it. It had to be hit five times with a rifle to score a point. In 1907, the first pistol range opened in Northport and soon became well known throughout the area for its high-quality guns and challenging courses. In 1936, the city government bought land at the corner of High Street and Meridian Avenue and began building what would become known as Municipal Park, which included two ranges featuring eighteen cannons each on three levels and an amusement park complete with track, swings, slides and other amusements. A separate shooting range was built for use by police officers in 1955; this range is now used as theNorthport Police Department Range. The current Targets complex was built in 1984 adjacent to Municipal Park. It features an eighteenth century plantation style home as one of its primary targets; twenty-four other target venues are also included within its walls (ten pistols only). More than 1 million rounds have been shot here since it opened!

Northport is a small town in Barbour County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Biloxi–Pascagoula Combined Statistical Area. Northport is located on State Route 98 and U.S. Route 231 northwest of Mobile and east of Pascagoula. The first permanent settler in what would become Northport was James Dickey in 1819. Dickey named his new community after himself, as he had traveled through the area before on business ventures with other settlers in that year. At the time, it was one of only a few places in Alabama where white men were living without assistance from Native Americans; most Native American groups had begun to abandon settlement within decades of European arrival hereabouts. Dickey's son John built a log cabin near what would later be known as downtown Northport in 1826; this became the first post office in Barbour County and remained so until 1865 when it moved to Mobile for reasons unknown. A store and hotel were both established soon thereafter by local businessmen John Hinchcliffe and Isaac Higgins; these two business ventures are generally considered to be the beginning of downtown Northport which now occupies much of its original footprint dating back to around 1846-47 when both businesses were relocated from their original locations due to construction projects going on adjacent streetscape across the street including First Avenue (now MLK Boulevard) then US 231/US 98W concurrent with current Second Avenue southwesterly (now MLK Boulevard) Street grid mapwise... In 1840, James Batelle arrived from Kentucky via Mobile Bayou with his family following land grants originally given by King George III to various Creek Nation individuals parcels totaling . He also founded Enterprise about twelve miles northeast of present day Northport along US 231/US 98W beside Iron Mountain Creek(); Enterprise became an important cotton ginning center during Reconstruction years because it could process large volumes whereas otherMobile sources such as Pensacola processed less newsprint per tonne than did Enterprise... Alsoexisting northwest along US 231/US 98W about five miles east of present day downtown North Port at that time was another early cotton gin operated by Jno Hinson called “The White Sulphur Springs” which continues upriver into today’s Warrior River valley just past mile marker 54 on HWY 494A (on SR 99E) - still active quite some time despite being abandoned circa 1960s when all but one building extant upon initial visit 1954 converted into apartments etc.; however present day impact & condition Rough estimate based digital satellite imagery indicates probable complete demolition or significant renovation not likely anytime soon... Remnants remaining today include approximately twenty two buildings comprising six blocks or structures each occupying approximately two acres +/- bounded by NW corner parcel formerly occupied by white style brick warehouse now used for apartments etc.,SE corner parcel once occupied by blacksmith shop now home to several restaurants etc., SW corner parcel once housewives dispensary remains today

However, it regained some importance in the late 1800s when steamboats started running upriver from Mobile Bay and trade increased along the Mobile-Alabama line. In 1925, Northport was incorporated as a city and has since experienced significant growth. Today, it is one of Alabama's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its vibrant downtown area and diverse architecture
