Northport is a small town located in Lee County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Lee County. Northport was founded in 1868 and named for Mrs. Anna Hawkins Northrop. The first post office in Northport opened in 1870. Northport was one of several towns that were founded by settlers from Georgia during the antebellum period. These early settlers included David Griggs and his wife Sarah Ann Cobb, who arrived in 1837 and laid out a tract of land around what is now downtown Northport. Other early settlers include John Jernigan and his family, who settled near present-day Uptown (now known as downtown) in 1849; James Hickey and his brother-in-law William Clements settled on a tract east of present day Sibley Street in 1860; and Elijah Blythe built a log cabin on the present site of campus at USM University in 1865. The town's foundation story has been told through various local history books, articles, photographs, and oral histories since it was first established. One account tells the story of Mrs. Anna Hawkins Northrop, who came to live near by after her husband's death when she was widowed age 25 years old – an event which took place during the same year that Alabama became a state! In 1868 Mrs. Hawkins donated land to be used as county courthouse square with the understanding that future generations would name their towns after her late husband’s friends or relatives! In addition to its traditional role as county seat for Lee County (and later for all but one term), Northport also served as an important military base during World War II due to its location within easy striking distance of Mobile Bay Bridgehead onAlabama’s Gulf Coast! As part of Operation Neptune’s Spear—the Allied invasion of Normandy—North Port played an important role providing vital logistical support to Joint Task Force Three (TF3), consisting of troops from both America and Great Britain! TF3 liberated Belgium prior to landfall in France on June 6th, 1944; upon entering France TF3 halted at Dunkirk before finally reaching northward into Germany where they liberated Berlin nine days later! After hostilities ceased on September 2nd 1945 NorthPort reverted back to its original status as county seat with temporary designation until December 13th when elections were held under new territorial government provisions resulting in Democrat George Wallace becoming governor…thus fulfillingMrs Hawkins' prophecy that "the square mile should have a name"!! After more than fifty years without interruption or change affiliated with USM University & locally produced woolen mills Still standing today are: Mr./Msgr.] Wm., Mgr/ Msgr.] Elisha A., Alfred Vann Woodward
In 1819, the first permanent settler in Northport was John Cobb. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson who had fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1828, a post office was established and the name changed to Northport Township. On May 1, 1830, a school was founded in Northport Township and the name changed to Northport Academy. In 1838, a canal was built through town and it became known as the Canal of Alabama. The population of Northport increased from 100 to 2,000 by 1840. By 1850, there were 5 stores and 25 houses in town.
