Northport is a small town in Alabama, located on the Gulf of Mexico. The population was 9,635 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Tuscaloosa– Fairborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. Northport is known for its shipbuilding industry and its annual Pearl Harbor Day Parade. The first permanent settler in what is now Northport was James Fenton, who arrived in 1795. A year later, John Wilkinson came to join Fenton and began to cultivate land around what would become Northport. In 1807, Priscilla Mayhew settled in what is now Northport and started a school. In 1818, John Hance established a sawmill on the river near present day Center Street and Middle Road. In 1819, Alexander McMurtry built a blacksmith shop on Church Street near present day State Road 371 (later US-41). This business became one of the most important in town and continued until 1903 when it was closed by J.P. Morgan after he made an investment there that failed. In 1827, Nathaniel Adair founded a ferry service across the river between Mobile Bay and downtown Mobile; this service continued until 1963 when it was replaced by Interstate 15 bridge construction project which destroyed much of downtown Mobile including Adair's Ferry building which still stands today as an historical landmark albeit diminished from its glory days decades ago! As early as 1840, prior to Alabama statehood being granted to the United States in December 1833*, residents ofMobile had engaged in trade with people living along Pensacola Bay – goods such as saltfish (salt), cottonseed oil (from cane plantations), sugar beets (a type of root crop) – bringing goods downriver by steamboat or sailing vessel from Spanish Fort on Pensacola Bayou before market transportation could take place overland through Indian Trail or other shorter routes available at that time* (*It should be noted that not all natives were merchants; some were fishermen/gatherers.) On July 4th of that year*, Abraham Lincoln visited Mobile with his wife Mary Todd Lincoln during their visit to MobileBay area; during their stop at Adair's Ferry landing they may have seen "the First Lady" for the first time†(* Actually she rode her horse Canute onto shore while President Lincoln disembarked.) After statehood was granted to Alabama on December 12th 1870*, many citizens migrated westward seeking new opportunities due to political instability existing east of the Etowah River* (*This migration has been documented extensively through books such as "Alabama: A History From Top To Bottom" written by Don Easley.*) As early as 1871*, Alabamians had formed associations under various names including “Masonic Lodge No 1” [* Another name given this group may have been "Citizens’ Union", since membership wasn't restricted onlyto those residing withinMobile]; these organizations helped transfer goods & services czarially needed back & forth between East Tennessee & West Louisiana via boats plying Pensacola Bayou** (*Note: There are several references which suggest that this shipment took place months earlier actually aboard USS Constitution instead which seems more likely because Constitution sailed into shoal areas off Louisiana coast & eventually delivered munitions needed for General Butler's siege against Confederate forces besieging Baton Rouge*) upriver *(See map below)*(* Note: We can only speculate about where #4 might be because no physical evidence exists verifying this claim however we believe it may lay somewhere within vicinity of original commercial center located at intersection between Centre Street NW & Third AvenueSE) . Some residents responded angrily when federal troops burned their homes situated along Chickasawhatchie Creek* {* Note: According to historian Don Easley numerous homes south side of creek were also torchED (& subsequent rebuilding began shortly thereafter although smaller scale *)} though others view these events simply as examples of military necessity @ *. By 1880*, both banks had grown large enough for families to live outside mobile; businesses grew rapidly thanks largely to imported goods coming ashore via steamship or pontoon boatloads housed inside warehouses converted into factories*****. Cotton production increased significantly during Reconstruction period followingCivil War due chiefly to cheap labor available freed slaves working on plantations adjacent& adjacent riverside towns such as Birmingham (& surrounding counties); during periods leading up c 1850- 1860 mills operated night shifts 7 days/wk **

The first inhabitants of what became Northport were Native Americans who lived along the bayou that flows through the town. In 1881, a group of white men from Mobile founded Northport as a trading post on Bay Street between US-422 and US-180. At that time, Northport was one of several small towns established in Jefferson County by white men to serve as markets for goods imported from Mobile and other areas down south. The post grew rapidly and by 1893 had become an important commercial center for northcentral Alabama. By 1900, Northport had over 100 businesses including three banks, four grocery stores, five hotels/motels, two churches and ten schools. By 1920, it had more than 300 businesses and over 2,000 people living in its downtown area alone. During World War II, Northport played an critical role in providing food for troops stationed overseas as well as munitions production at nearby Muscle Shoals National Laboratory (now known as Birmingham University).
