Northport is a town in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Bibb County were French and Spanish traders who called the area "Nova Scotia" because of its natural resources. In 1819, John Chapman explored the area and named it after Northampton Township in Massachusetts. In 1827, Jeptha Gentry founded Gentry's Mills which became one of the most important textile mills in Alabama. After two years of construction, he started production; by 1830, his mill had produced more than 1 million yards of cloth a year. The cotton industry grew rapidly here and by 1840 there were more than 50 mills in operation along with 300 slaves working at them. The cotton industry collapsed around 1850 due to overproduction from slavery; however, tourism began to grow as people realized how great these mills could be for generating jobs and revenue. Northport became an important tourist destination with hotels, restaurants and other businesses sprouting up all around the town center. By 1960 there were only five remaining businesses left in town while 95% of the population had moved away or lost their jobs to Interstate Highway 65 development between Huntsville and Decatur. However, during this time period some significant progress was made within Northport as well: First off was a new high school built in 1962 that continues to serve as a model for educational institutions acrossAlabama today; secondly was renovations done to city hall which allowed for increased use and efficiency within government services; thirdly was creation of an innovative park system that includes several sports fields as well as a community pool; fourthly was establishment of a new downtown business district complete with art galleries and boutiques.; fifthly was construction on the first phase of what would become known as "TheVillage", located just south of town on US 180 near FM 190/SR 2
On April 4, 1861, the Confederate States of America seceded from the United States and declared themselves a separate country. Northport was one of the first towns in Alabama to recognize this change and supported the Confederacy. The town had a small population at the time, but it quickly became an important center for Confederate activity. Northport's role in the war continued even after its annexation into Confederate territory. In 1862, Northport's mayor, John Neely Butler, helped organize an army called the "Alabama Battalion" which served in General Robert E. Lee's army. After the battle of Gettysburg, Butler was captured and executed by Union forces. This event helped create a strong sense of loyalty to Confederate causes in Northport.
