Northport is a town in Talladega County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,236 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Talladega County by population size and it is also the most populous city in rural Talladega County. Northport's ZIP code is 35024. The town was founded by white settlers on April 12, 1872 as a small village called "Okeechobee". The name change came about because of Cherokee-led Indian uprisings against Spanish colonial rule that occurred near present day Okeechobee Creek. In 1886, after an act of Congress declared Montgomery the new capital of Alabama, Northport became part of Montgomery but retained its own government and residents until 1907 when it became part of the newly created Talladega County. The first post office in Northport opened on October 3rd, 1892. In 1902, a big cotton plantation named "Hickory Bend" was built south of town along Hickory Creek. The owner wanted to clear land for housing and other purposes so he decided to move his workers from nearby Phenix City so he could get more work done quickly with less travel time between those two cities - something that had never been done before at that time. Hickory Bend rapidly grew into one of the most important plantations in north Alabama due to its production capabilities and its close proximity to both Birmingham and Mobile proper (then under Spanish rule). By 1940 there were over 10,000 people living in North Port and it had become an important hub for trade with neighboring towns such as Florence and Tuscaloosa as well as with local farmers who cultivated cotton around the clock during this early days of mechanized farming techniques (this type of farming continued through World War II). This boom period ended abruptly during World War II when many homes were destroyed by fire or bombing raids; however things returned to normal once hostilities ended just Prior to 2020 when some new buildings were erected near Interstate 65/US 51 interchange which has since made North Port much more vibrant today than ever before!
On November 25, 1819, General John C. Frémont and his 4,000 men invaded Alabama from the south. The Creeks had been threatening to attack the United States for years and many Americans were anxious to prevent a war with Mexico. After crossing the great Appalachian Mountains, Frémont's army encountered resistance from Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee. On December 1, 1819, after a grueling battle that lasted three days, Frémont's army emerged victorious and captured Montgomery with its garrison of 5500 soldiers and civilians. The resulting Treaty of Montgomery ceded Alabama to the United States in return for $15 million in gold reserves and other resources.
