Northport was founded in 1825 by General James H. Forrest and his family. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Alabama River and its access to timber and water supplies. Northport became an important commercial center during the antebellum period, with a large number of businesses growing up around the river bank. The town experienced rapid growth and development during the late 19th century, reaching a peak in population size at around 1,000 people in 1892. However, economic decline began to take hold in Northport after World War I caused increased demand for military goods and services, while lumber prices declined overall. In the 1920s, however, Northport began to experience significant progress as it moved away from its traditional fishing and agricultural roots into becoming an important city within the local community. By the 1940s, Northport had lost much of its significance as a commercial center due to declining oil production and military spending combined with increasing competition from other nearby towns. However, recent redevelopment efforts have begun to revive some of Northport's former commercial assets including a new downtown district and several high-rise buildings housing office space and apartments
