Northport was founded in 1853 by settlers from Tennessee and Georgia. The town became a county seat in 1907 and was re-established as a city on December 1, 1978. The town of Northport sits on an inland bay on Mobile Bay, facing Pensacola Bay to the north and Gulf of Mexico to the south. Downtown Northport is bounded by 2nd Street on the eastern waterfront; 4th Street extended westward to paralleling Mobile Bay shoreline; Michigan Avenue runs along its southern border; US 71 intersects it just east of downtown; US 90 skirts its western edge. According to the 2010 Census, Racial & Ethnic Diversity: White (84%), Black (5%), Hispanic (7%), Other Race (3%). As of 2000, there were 5,854 people living in Northport proper with 3% who were Native American or Alaskan Native and 96% who were white Americans. In other words, over 99% of all residents are white people! Of course this percentage would be even higher if not for large percentages of black residents as well... According to one estimate only 10% or less of all businesses are owned by any minority group! As you can see from these data points very few minorities have any significant impact whatsoever on either economic development or social stability within Northport! The lack of diversity among both citizens and business owners really does stand out when looking at this smallish town compared to most throughout Alabama!

Northport experienced significant growth during the postwar period as a result of its location on US-1 and its status as an important port for shipping goods into and out of Mobile Bay. The economy collapsed during the late 1990s due to changes in trade patterns and government policy related to NAFTA negotiations. However, since 2001 Northport has been experiencing gradual but consistent growth thanks to new development along US-1 and investments by local businesses in tourism and other industries
In 1892, a post office was established in Northport. The first postmaster was James H. Ellis. In 1915, the name of the town was changed to Northport Village and the Post Office remained there until it closed in 1970.
