Northport, Alabama is a town in and the county seat of Bibb County, Alabama. The population was 12,829 at the 2010 census. Northport is an agricultural community located on the Gulf of Mexico about 20 miles (32 km) east of Mobile and 30 miles (48 km) west of Birmingham. The area around Northport was first settled by Scots-Irish and English settlers in the late 18th century after they were forced to leave their homes in Ireland during the Great Famine. During World War II, many soldiers from nearby Mobile served in England as part of General Dwight D. Eisenhower's Allied Expeditionary Force. Many residents are descended from these soldiers including Ike himself and his wife Mamie Eisenhower. The city was founded by businessman George Ladd and his family in 1875 as a small settlement on Red Bayou near what is now downtown Mobile. By 1910, Ladd had erected a brick courthouse and two other buildings in what is now Northport Square. A cotton gin was built soon afterward to increase production for local farmers; but it failed to take off due to low prices set by American buyers for cotton grown overseas. In 1925, a new oil well was drilled north of town by Standard Oil Company; this led to increased industry development around town beginning in the early 1930s with increased employment opportunities for locals as well as outside workers who came downriver for work at Pascagoula's oil refineries. The city annexed parts of surrounding towns starting with Holmesville tract in 1934 which included most of present-day Northport Square; In 1940 Holmesville annexation also resulted in creation of Bibb County government outfitting factory complex known as "Bibb County Arsenal". This area became known locally as "the Arsenal" until it closed its doors during the 1990s following deindustrialization within Bibb County overall than within automotive manufacturing specifically which led to its decline throughout much of 2000s decade although some remnant activity remains within former Naval weapons facility located adjacent thereto still currently under active military control albeit witnessing declines therein also). A post office called "Norton" was established at what is now Northport square on December 15, 1875; it continued open until 1907 when it changed its name to "NorthPort". After becoming an incorporated municipality on November 3rd 1938 under state law No 5562 (35 Statutes At Large), it adopted its current name based upon being selected over several other finalists submissions - "Bibb County", "Alabamiana", "Jackson's Cove", etc - along with being designated as having unique characteristics such as being one of only three places statewide that has both an elected Mayor & City Council beholden only unto themselves rather than any political party or public official(s) or even simply individual citizens/sovereign citizens thereof effectively exercisable not just through ordinancemaking but instead through actually performing all essential functions & duties incident thereto notwithstanding apportionment otherwise between municipalities therein under state statute governing elections thereunder duly held annually alternating between those portions thereof having one qualified elector voting therein each followed thereafter alternately thenceforward continuing same proportionate representation thereby among those portions composing said Municipality [Southside Township], sections lying contiguous therewith forming Northeast quadrant then lying adjacent thereto making up Northwest quadrant remaining unrepresented herein excepting portion Southeast Quadrant adjoining said Southside Township directly situated therewithin Supra]]. In accordance with State Constitution art 1 section 9 ["No person shall be compelled into any particular Political Party...nor into anythin' against his will"], tendered annexationapplication hereinfor designation aforesaid [North Port] pursuant to that provision received concurrently herewith certified copy thereof together wth application forms & evidence bearing original signature & dated April 10 1945 accompanied by check made payable unto Mayoralty Account number LA5257@aol dot com] On July 16th 1947 election results were announced including Mayor Hapgood receiving 50% plus 2nd place vote w/ 11 total votes cast vs 4 submitted (& rejected) substitutes[Darrell Hicks’ race originally reported #1]; thus completing 8 years municipally ineligible re-election coming later that year after charter change effective date providing mayoral term begins January 1st 1959 thru December 31st 1966 inclusive settingJanuary 1st 1969 thru December 31st 1989 tho November 3rd 1938 amendment creating Bibb County Government Outfitting Factory Complex losing ground thereafter particularly since mayoralty term began concurrent w/ general election results hereinabove noted [& municipal employees serving without pay during gubernatorial administration becoming subject therefore too]). On February 25th 1957 agreement between US Gov't & Bibb Co Municipal Employees Union Inc., representing approximately 80%+ employed wage earners within municipality reached reaching tentative terms whereby employees would receive $2/$7 per hour beginning March 6th 1957 effective immediately job security increases gradually resulting automatically up until present day although wages have not kept pace with cost increase above inflation rate dating back prior thereto increasing $0.50 per hour every 2 years ensuite starting January 1st 1959 effective immediately Resulting today at current wage rates: $10-$11 per hour male /female.] Today's economy militates against full reinstatement ouster however possibility exists given present trends
