Northport is a town in Limestone County, Alabama, United States. The population was 4,752 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Tensaw–Flint Metropolitan Statistical Area. Northport was founded in 1822 by General John Clements and his wife Sarah Hodge Clements along the Mobile River. The Dutchman Hendrick Hudson settled in what is now Northport in 1724 and traders from New York City established a trading post there in 1739. In 1822, General John Clements bought land at mouth of the Mobile River from Upson Rogers for $1,000 and began to build a house on it named "Clements' Fort". The town was platted on February 10, 1830, by James Hance and Wm. Lunsford. On July 13, 1836,Alabama statehood was granted to Alabama with its own Constitution and Alabama's first election took place on November 3rd of that year with General Clements as its first governor Held at Cahokia Muhlenburg Presbyterian Church (now known as Cahokia State Historic Site) Clements had Masonic Lodge No. 6 organized on this date which still meets annually there today under the name "Old Knights Templar"

He was given permission by President James K Polk to build a military fort at this site north of Mobile on Waveland Bayou (now known as Senator Bayou). The fort became known as Fort Sam Houston after General Sam Houston's victory over Canadian forces there on October 6, 1819. The city of Northport was founded on November 10,1836 by Andrew Jethro Gibbs and others under the name "Natchez". It was incorporated on December 5,1836. In 1840 it had a population of only 116 people; however due to heavy cotton production it grew rapidly thereafter with a population of 2,500 by 1850 During Reconstruction efforts within Alabama led by Governor George C Marshall (D-Ala.), Northport played an important role as a transportation hub and center for white political activity while black citizens were disenfranchised throughout much of Alabama following Jim Crow laws enacted during Reconstruction era America
In 1819, Northport was founded by Captain James D. Cook and his men as the first English settlement in Alabama. The town grew rapidly, becoming a major shipping center for goods reaching the interior of the United States. In 1868, Northport was renamed after General George Custer in recognition of his role in the Union victory at Gettysburg.
