The present day downtown area of North Port was platted during the late 1800s when steamboats were all running between Mobile Bayou and Pensacola Bayou long before Interstate 10 was constructed just south of town limits; this areas now known as Old Town (southwest corner Main Street) and New Town (northwest corner High Street). The first post office called "Pensacola" opened on October 3rd 1892 under postal authority from Mobile but mail services were not established until 1895 when Jacksonville became the state capital; however by 1902 both Pensacola AND Mobile had become too busy so postal authorities decided upon a consolidated office pattern with Pensacola having primary responsibility for mail operations while Mobile handled stationery needs until 1907 when they completely discontinued operations. With no railroads nearby providing access to markets or towns inland there was little reason for businesses within these limits except local trade; however some did start up such as J F Murphy’s grocery store which became one of the earliest enclosed stores west of Arkansas when it opened on Main Street near what is now First Avenue South in 1906 followed by W H McGee’s millinery store across from railroad tracks east of what is now Middlebrook Drive; these early businesses dotted picturesque streets lining bayous north and northwest Of townlimits until oil exploration began along Gulf Coast In 1911 so business opportunities changed dramatically leading to rapid growth & development among those who could afford it For nearly 60 years NorthPort has been known for being Commerce & Development Center Of The Gulf Coast

Northport was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the 1720s. The town grew quickly on the into a small farming community with a mill and store. In 1814, the federal government awarded land to Northport for military infrastructure development purposes; this led to the town's rapid growth over time. By 1850, Northport had become one of the largest slave markets in Alabama and played an important role in both its economy and social life. In 1865, during Union General Robert Ewell's campaign against Confederate General Jubal Early, Northport was attacked by Confederate forces under Early; after three days of fighting, Union troops drove Early from the town. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, many African Americans left Northport for new opportunities elsewhere in Alabama or out of state; however, some black residents continued to live and work in Northport until around 1920. Today much of downtown North Port remains intact from when it operated as a small center for local commerce and industry until well into the 1950s when it fell victim to highway reconstruction that disrupted trade along US 31/US 71 (now I-65). Overall though much has changed since then including significant gentrification taking place within walking distance of many businesses especially along US 31 which now sees heavy traffic but still serves as a popular retail destination with lots of locally made products available thanks to shopping areas such as Olde Towne MallBeyond that few remnants remain testifying not only to how rapidly this once thriving community went through but also its lasting legacy today
