On November 15, 1817, a group of men from Northport formed the nucleus of what would become the Legion of Alabama. The group was organized to support General Andrew Jackson in his efforts against the Seminole Indians. The Legion served as a militia and eventually became an infantry regiment. In 1830, it was redesignated the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment and fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1836, it was disbanded after poor performance during the war. In 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Union troops at Fort Sumter in South Carolina, parts of the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment joined Confederate forces and fought in that battle as part of Special Brigade A.F.L.-CSA under General Braxton Bragg. On July 12, 1862, while leading Special Brigade AFF-CSA into battle at Gettysburg near Civil War's end, General Bragg ordered his brigade commanders to disband their units if they failed to score three touchdowns on their first three plays from scrimmage within sixty seconds of each other. The brigade commanders did not follow this order and many soldiers from brigades 2nd (West Point), 3rd (Macon), 4th (Montgomery County), 5th (Elmore County) and 6th (Butler County) deserted during that day's engagement; these units surrendered shortly thereafter at Appomattox Court House without resistance or looting by Confederate troops. Afterward some members of those brigades re-grouped and continued fighting with Bragg's army until relieved by Union forces on April 9, 1865 at Monterrey Texas
