Bullets have been a part of the Northport community for many years. Bullet history can be traced back to 1868, when a man by the name of John C. Frisbee purchased a pistol from David G. Stephenson in this town. Mr. Frisbee used his pistol to shoot group targets at the old courthouse in neighboring Prattville during target practice. In 1896, Reverend Wm. Henson built a rifle range in Northport and began using bullets for target shooting purposes. In 1912, Captain Fenton Denny organized the first police department in Northport with revolvers as their primary weapon. Since then, pistols and rifles have been our city'sprimary weapons for law enforcement officials and citizens alike! "From its beginning until today," says Mayor-elect Treena Richardson about our city's firearms history, "Northport has been home to some of Alabama's most experienced shooters." In fact, over the years there have been several major events that have shapedbullet history in our small town: Thefirst open air Pistol & Rifle match was held on September 7th of 1886;The first state championship ( trap/ skeet) event was held on October 5th of 1911; The first annual Shotgun Showcase took place on May 6th of 1967...to list just a few! Northport was founded in 1875 by Yankees and African Americans who had come to work on the nearby Mobile Railroad. The town rapidly grew and by 1906 it had 1,500 residents. In 1969, after years of decline in population and economic activity due to automation, Northport became an all-white municipality. However, over time its demographics have slowly regained some life as black people have returned to the community and businesses have reopened.
