Northport is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 5,921 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County. Aftermath of the American Civil War led to Reconstruction which began in 1865; this period saw much economic decline for Northport as many African Americans were brought into indentured servitude to work on plantations outside of Birmingham or Mobile while white citizens took control of government services including education, business enterprise and law enforcement. However progress did eventually be made thanks to heavy investment from northerners such as Andrew Carnegie who donated money towards infrastructure projects such as roads, schools and hospitals while black men were given ownership stakes in many local businesses beginning around 1920s culminating with black residents owning half or all property within Northport limits by 1970s according to some sources however others claim there has been no real change since then with most blacks remaining poor despite seeing some modest advances during Reconstruction era such as increased access to education opportunities for black residents starting after World War II although income disparities continue today despite recent efforts initiated by city officials aimed at addressing these disparities
