Northport, Alabama is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County. Northport was founded on December 12, 1817 by John Cockerill and James Denton as an attempt to centralize trade between the states of Georgia and Alabama. In 1861, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee decided to move his army from Northern Virginia to the south side of Mobile Bay in order to protect his forces along that coast against Union pressure, he ordered all supplies for his troops be brought downriver from Montgomery so that they could not be used against him if he were captured or destroyed by Union forces. This forced many small businesses in downtown Northport to close their doors because there was no way for them to transport their goods upriver or get them delivered back into town until after General Lee had been recaptured and moved north again. However, this did not stop local residents from coming together and starting a citizens' militia called the "Northport Volunteers" in order to help defend their town against any possible aggression from Union troops or anyone else who might try to take it away from them during the war. The volunteers continued fighting even though they were limited in resources due to lack of reimbursement from both sides for military service; however, their efforts paid off and within a few months Confederate General Jubal Early had withdrawn all his forces east of Mobile Bay without losing any ground). Once the war ended and Reconstruction began in America following its conclusion, Northport became one of several towns throughout Alabama which lost most of their business opportunities due to changes in regulation brought about by President Ulysses S Grant's administration (in particular), but also because many people left for new homes outside of Alabama during this time frame (this trend would continue across much of America during Reconstruction). However, some local businesses did manage to reestablish themselves over time; such as The Gilded Cage Brewery which reopened after being closed down for years while its owners tried various other ventures; Big Joe's grocery store which has been open continuously since 1924 despite having very little competition now than it did when it first opened; and John Cockerill Elementary School which still operates today despite only having around 100 students enrolled each year (due largely to budget restrictions put place on school districts during this time period). The current incarnation of Northport began developing as a small community shortly after World War II when many farmers came through town looking for land after being driven out of rural areas near Atlanta by mechanized farming techniques; thus giving birth not justto what is now known as retail development but also housing developments such as Woodland Hills Apartments (now home to more than 500 tenants) and Copper Hill Condominiums (which have become one of Birmingham's most popular neighborhoods), among others.
