The first company town in Alabama was founded at Muscle Shoals by James Fenton and Alex Graham Bell in 1874 because they needed a place to store their goods during the construction of their new railroad line through central Alabama. In 1907, local businessmen organized what became known as "The Big Four" companies: First National Bank and Trust Company (later First Tennessee Banking Corporation), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airways Company (later Pan American World Airways), and Gulfstream Aviation Corporation (later Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation). They desired to build an airport close to home so they could serve as model communities for other entrepreneurs who wanted to start businesses in southern Alabama. This innovation led directly to today's economy with several large businesses based here including Tyson Foods Inc., Ford Motor Company, Lockheed Martin Corp., Huntsman Air Force Base and many more smaller businesses that continue to contribute positively to current economic conditions all while maintaining close relationships with their community counterparts across America - something that has not been seen often since before Birmingham began developing into a global center for business!
