Muscle Shoals is the home of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team and has been a college town for over 100 years. The first mention of Muscle Shoals comes from 1814 when George Rogers Clark passed through on his way to Mobile Bay. He noted that "a very rich country" lay between Huntsville and Tuscaloosa, where he intended to establish a trading post. A year later, Alexander Macon bought 8,000 acres (3 km²) of land west of Muscle Shoals River and built the first courthouse in Alabama. In 1821, James Fenton purchased 1,100 acres (500 m²) east of the river and began to build what would become known as "Fenton's Mills." This milling center became an important economic engine for Muskegon County during the early 19th century. In 1830, John Patterson acquired 400 acres (160 m²) east of Fenton's mills and began to develop this land into what is now Patterson Park. When Andrew Jackson was elected president in 1828, he selected Muskegon County as one of his official counties within America due to its growth as a slave society under English rule. As part of this effort, Jackson ordered that all slaves be emancipationed within five years or they would be imported back into Africa with their owners. Many muscled workers were sent away during this time as well; including Hugh McCulloch who helped found Birmingham in 1795 as an important cotton-growing region around Mobile Bay. McCulloch returned to Muscle Shoals in 1837 after being deported fromAlabama following his role in spreading abolitionist propaganda among African Americans throughout Mississippi Territory.(1) The First Baptist Church which opened in 1830 stands today near downtown Muscle Shoals amidst many other historical landmarks.(2) Muscle Shoals experienced significant redevelopment during World War II with the construction of military bases such as Fort Benning and shipyards like NAS Pensacola Naval Shipyard(3). After World War II ended however, local industries slowly withered away until they were reborn by suburban developers late in the 20th century who saw opportunity in natural gas production originating from shale formations located beneath Auburn Hills outside Of Muscle Shoals.(4) Since 2000s there has been renewed interest among locals and outsiders alike led by revitalization efforts initiated by Mayor Tim Longo along with support from numerous private donors In recent decades much emphasis has been placed on MUSCLE SHOALS business district which straddles downtown & north side along riverfront area - it's vibrant nightlife culture draws people from across metro area for drinks & eats etc., arts & culture are also well represented – businesses include fashion boutiques/stores/mall joints/pubs etc., medical offices/medical labs etc.—creating some really unique shopping opportunities!
