Since then, Muscle Shoals has struggled with strife within its own community and reliance on government assistance to keep its businesses running- most notably during World War II when it played an important role in munitions production. Muscle Shoals was founded by white men in 1819 as a cotton plantation town on the Choctaw River. In 1865, Muscle Shoals became part of the newly created Confederate states of Alabama following the American Civil War.
