Gun Targets in Muscle Shoals, Alabama date back to 1875. The first shooting range in the town was established by Judge James A. Cook. Cook had a 100-acre plantation and he wanted his guns to be available for use on his property. He also built a rifle range and training ground on his land. In 1903, the Tennessee Valley Authority constructed a dam across the Muscle Shoals River in order to create water power for their aluminum plants in Chattanooga, Tennessee. As a result of this project, gun target firing began at the new range located downstream from the dam. After years of NRA activity and support, the current facility opened its doors to the public in 1955. The NRA donated $1 million towards construction of the current building which is named after Rear Admiral Husband E. Kimmel Jr., commander of US Fifth Fleet during World War II and an early advocate for gun control (see Gun Ownership in America). Muscle Shoals is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur metropolitan area. The Muscle Shoals area was first settled by English and Scotts colonists in 1795. In 1819, General John Cushing founded the city of Decatur in what is now Marshall County as a stop on his march to Total War: England and America. In 1829, Stephenson built the first steam locomotive in Alabama at Muscle Shoals. The town was renamed Muscle Shoals after Arthur Ashe's victory over Sam Houston in a chess match at nearby Taliaferro Park on April 12, 1901. By 1930, aluminum production led to an increase in population from 5,000 to 10,000 residents and the town annexed neighboring towns of Decatur and Springdale until it had a total population of 25,811 people. The Muscle Shoals Area Chamber Orchestra (MSAYO) was formed in 1967 as a merger between two local chamber orchestras: the East Tennessee Symphony Orchestra (ETSO) and the Alabama Philharmonic Orchestra (APH). MUSICNOW! also started up here with some great new equipment that helped spawn today's many musical icons including Drifting Stones Band Straitwalker Guitars & More while other titan companies such as Gibson guitars have all been headquartered or produced here since its inception like Telecasters for Gregg Allman & Friends or Epiphone Les Pauls for Joe Bonamassa.
