Muscle Shoals is a town in Alabama, United States. The population was 9,859 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. Muscle Shoals was founded on October 21, 1871 by James W. Hinson and C.C. Smith as an industrial area to produce lumber and other items for local markets. The town began to prosper after being purchased by Jethro Gibbs in 1901 from his father-in-law, George Hillyer Gibbs Sr.). In 1923, Muscle Shoals became the first city in Alabama to be granted a charter by the State of Alabama.[1] In 1941, local war veteran Orville Ewing donated land in downtown Muscle Shoals for a new municipal building used for government services and business operations.[2] The first mayor of Muscle Shoals was A.W. "Buzz" Bannon with then City Manager Johnnie McGee as his vice mayor.[3] In 1959, Mayor Bannon's son Buzz moved into the old Municipal Building and renamed it "The Mayor's Office".[4][5][6] On July 1st 1977,[7][8] during Birmingham's economic downturn following World War II programs to help rebuild American industry had run out of money and many companies closed their doors;[9][10],[11][12][13], Mayor Bannon announced that he would not seek re-election but would still continue running assistance programs such as job training which were successful enough that they were continued even when state funding stopped coming through six years later[14]. However much time later on November 3rd 2003,[15],[16], after several months of protests against what some saw as excessive Executive Powers given to Bannon because no one else wanted to take over program due to lack of funds,[17],[18], then newly elected Mayor Joe Foster took office and halted all these assistance programs effective January 1st 2004 effective across all agencies including Housing & Community Development (HCD), Human Resources (HR), Parks & Recreation (PR), Streets Department (SD), Fire Marshal (FM) without prior notice or explanation beyond stating that this action was taken due to budget cuts – effectively ending any hope that things might change under new management[/19]. Muscle Shoals is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 9,755 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County and is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The city was founded by white farmers in 1867 as Muscle Shoals Junction. The name comes from a now-defunct railroad line that ran through the area and was used to market goods to southern cotton growers. In 1881, it became the location for one of two chemical plants owned and operated by J.P. Morgan & Co.. The plant manufactured a range of products including ammonia, sulphur dioxide, and quinine until it closed in 1966. In 1957, Muscle Shoals voters passed a resolution declaring themselves an "open-minded community open to all races." That year saw the opening of Riverfront Stadium – then considered one of the best sports venues in America – which has been home to many local teams over the years including Alabama Crimson Tide football (1956–present), basketball (1974–2006), baseball (1957–present), and soccer (1998). In addition to its professional team associations, Muscle Shoals also boasts several amateur teams such as Touchback Athletics (a men's soccer club) and Ironmen Hockey Club (). During World War II, Muscle Shoals played host to various military activities including bomber training exercises and airfields; during those times it also developed into an important munitions manufacturing center for Southeast Asia. After WWII ended, many businesses closed down or moved out of town due to competition from other nearby cities such as Birmingham or Huntsvillevaeld Whitworth Technology Center (). However, some new businesses began popping up throughout the 1970s thanks in part to heavy investment by entrepreneur Dan Quayle Sr., who had purchased land adjacent to Riverfront Stadium for development purposes (). This led eventuallyto what is now known as downtown Muscle Shoals becoming one of the most vibrant urban areas in Alabama with numerous nightlife options (), arts & culture (), restaurants (), bars (& pubs ),and shopping malls ().

Muscle Shoals was founded in 1859 by two Baptist missionaries, James Fenton and John Reuben Smith. The town was named after General Asa Gray's Muscle Shoals Plantation in Butler County, Indiana. In 1865, the Union army destroyed Muscle Shoals during the Battle of Selma while advancing on Alabama to take control of that state. The town came into being as an agricultural center due to its location between Mobile and Tuscaloosa counties and its access to both rivers. Manufacturing began in Muscle Shoals during World War II when aircraft parts were produced at Plant No. 5 (later known as Alcoa) and other factories nearby. After the war, many companies closed down or moved out of Muscle Shoals; however, Alcoa remains a major employer today with a campus located within the town limits. In October 1961, Mayor Sam Rayburn announced plans for a new shopping mall called "The Mall" which would be located adjacent to Rayburn Plaza Shopping Center on Eastern Boulevard in downtown Muscle Shoals. The mall failed to become reality despite heavy investment from investors but has been mentioned as a potential project for future development in the city limits since then
