Muscle Shoals is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur metropolitan area. The community name comes from an allusion to "the Muscle Shoals River" because of its wide and deep channel. The first people to set foot in what is now Muscle Shoals were white settlers who arrived in 1819. They named their new land Muscles Shoals after a small creek that ran through it. In 1825, John Smith and his brother James founded nearby Decatur, Alabama on the same site as Muscle Shoals. By 1830, there were 5 families living in Muscle Shoals and 20 households living in Decatur proper. In 1835, General Andrew Jackson appointed Colonel James Hance commander of the Mobile District militia while he was governor of Alabama. When Jackson left office in 1837, Hance became brigadier general and commandant of the Mobile District Militia instead of returning to Muscle Shoals where he would have been under scrutiny from Jackson's successor as governor, Alexander Stephens. A few years later (1840), Congress passed a bill authorizing President James Kenedy to make purchases for military purposes between New Orleans and Atlanta without having to get approval from the Senate which was then controlled by Jefferson Davis On March 1st 1840 Samuel Fenton purchased 8 acres (2 km²) at what is now downtown Muscle Shoals from Colonel Jno Hughes for $1 per acre Fenton laid out this tract into blocks called "villages." On July 10th 1840 Thos Blythe organized a village at what is now downtown Muscle Shoals with 30 members including 12 men farmers who had also bought lots there earlier that year for $100 each On August 9th 1840 Captn Richard Moultrie organized another village near present day Enterprise with 36 members including 16 men farmers who had also bought lots there earlier that year for $100 each . These villages developed into main towns or settlements around which businesses grew such as grocery stores (frequent fires destroyed some early stores), churches (built soon after 1793 when First Baptist Church moved from Cumberland Gap to present day Muscle Shoals), schools (formed soon after classes began at First Baptist Church in 1827), blacksmiths shops and other related businesses catering primarily to local residents rather than travelers passing through town on their way westward or eastward across Tennessee Valley Railroad tracks
