That establishment became one of the largestGun shops in America. In 1835, James Witherspoon established agunsmithing business at what is now known as 3rd Street & Meridian Avenue in Muscle Shoals. That business was renamed Witherspoon & Sons Gunsmithing Company after James’ death on July 10th, 1845. Witherspoon was an important figure ingunsmaking throughout his life and his son John Hetherington continued that tradition after his father’s death. The company produced rifles and pistols for both military and civilian use until it closed its doors for good in 1915. The next major player on the scene was Julius Caesar Hatfield who owned a store at 2nd Street & Meridian Avenue from 1865-1870 before moving to 214 Park Avenue where he operated a cigar store until his death on February 25th, 1904 age 80 years old). Julius Caesar Hatfield had been born into a wealthy family of tobacco merchants who had originated near Lexington Kentucky but had relocated their business to Muscle Shoals circa 1865 when they acquired land west of downtown along 3rd Street bearing their initials “Hatfield” (later “Hatcher”) It should be noted that although he did not own any guns himself he did financially support many local GUNSMITHING establishments including those at 2nd Street & Meridian Avenuewhich were run by his brother-in-law Hiram Garrison Garrisonshawyer brothers Adolphus Willinghamand William Seward among others
